The un-offical group “First Fleet” is made up of Jvles, Thrillboy, kappa, dontsleep, jayoh and lexei. I got the chance to ask Jayoh a few questions about his creative process and what inspires him.
How old are you and where are you from?
I’m 16 and I’m from Sydney, Australia.
What is your creative process like for making clothing? Does it often change?
Usually I think of something I reckon is hard (usually right before I fall asleep lol), and as soon as I can I open Photoshop and just try to make it as accurate to my imagination as possible. Often the idea evolves a lot while its on the screen and I change stuff just to try to make it even better. I’ve got so many crazy ideas in this notebook that I can’t wait to get produced. Actually getting stuff made into a physical product is the hard part for me as I’m still pretty inexperienced in this industry to be real.
How did you start designing?
About 3 years ago I just downloaded Photoshop because my school provided it for free and just kind of messed around with it on and off since then, only like a year or so ago would I say that I got proficient in it, and now I’ve reached a point where if i have a concept I can mostly create it accurately to what I’m imagining. I still suck at drawing though lol.
Who inspires you, and why?
A lot of music inspires me, and as well as that there are a few designers that inspire me, but to be honest I think my work is inspired more by music than other art. I listen to a lot of Nascar Aloe, David Shawty and Autumn when I’m working on stuff, I also listen to The Clash heaps but not usually while working. Also I have to mention that Reeno (who is a very smart guy and incredible artist) inspires me a lot, creatively and personally.
How did you get exposed to the Sound-cloud Community?
I was originally a producer, I still make beats but I think now a lot of people know me for my art specifically.
-What do you enjoy most about designing?
I think designing clothes specifically is really creatively fulfilling because it’s something that a lot of people are able to connect with. Not everyone is into graphics on clothes, and that’s fine, but everyone wears clothes. To be able to design and produce something in a medium that a very large group of people can appreciate is really cool to me.
-What constitutes a good design ?
It really depends on your audience, I’m still experimenting with my brand right now, so I haven’t got a set of boxes I tick with every design. I just make what I’m feeling, it changes a lot I guess. Right now I think my designs are more cohesive, I’ve experimented a lot with more abstract crazy looking designs, which I still make occasionally. Sometimes I think I’ve got no idea what constitutes a good design because often my least favorite item in a drop will be the one that sells most, or I’ll drop something I think is crazy and it’ll get a mediocre reaction.
Are you looking to collaborate with any other brands or artists going into 2020? If so who?
In terms of brands, Menace, Ryder Studios, Half Evil, Nightclub, and Absent are all brands I believe in, they all have strong communities surrounding them and I’d love to make some stuff with all of them given the opportunity.
– Any shoutouts?
Shoutout Hollow.
Jayoh just released a charity shirt for the fires that have been raging in Australia. If they are still available, cop one here. We will be hopping into the youtube world very soon so keep a look out for more content revolving around internationally talented artists perfecting their craft, whatever it may be.
